Havelock Falls - Sat. 10th February 2018
This alpine walk skirts along the northern edge of the Central Plateau,
crossing extensive heathlands and reaching an impressive ravine which
must be descended to reach the waterfalls. The distance
involved and the varying conditions under foot, as well as the
clambering required in the ravine, have led to this walk being rated as
medium-hard, and suited to more experienced walkers with good and
reasonably paced mobility, especially over boulder fields. This might include
energetic and resilient older children. Total walk distance is about 14
km.
Note: There are 3 sets of falls in the location, including Warner's Falls. The goal of the walk is to reach Havelock's Falls which are substantially further down the rivulet from the other falls, which may be bypassed.
Walk route:
Starting from Pine Lake on the fully sealed part of the Lake Highway (aka Highland Lakes Rd) just south of Projection Bluff, the walk skirts the northern shore of Pine Lake and passes south of Adams Peak, heading west across open and untracked alpine heathland for a little over 5 km to a point where Duncanson's Rivulet drops away through a widening ravine on the northern edge of the plateau. To reach the falls, a steep descent is required, including some clambering. The return journey may vary somewhat, but will eventually return past Adam's Peak and Pine Lake.

If you are interested in going on this walk, please phone John Tabor on 6428 6512 to book in. The departure time is 7:30 am from Door of Hope carpark in South Launceston. The alternative meeting place/time is at the "train park" in Deloraine at 8:00 am. (If coming from east, cross the bridge and turn right at the roundabout to park near the toilet block.)
Please discuss alternative meeting times and places with the leader. However, you still need to contact the walk leader per details above if intending to walk. The leader should be notified of any other people you intend to bring along. Please be at any meeting place 5 minutes ahead of departure time.
To access this area from northern Tasmania:
From Launceston, head towards Deloraine on the Bass Highway (50 km) and take the first (eastern) turn from the highway into Deloraine. Continue into the town and turn left immediately before the bridge (meeting place - see above). From Deloraine, head south along the "Lake Highway" - now Highland Lakes Rd. (but the first bit may be called Meander Rd!). Make sure to turn left after 7 km at signposted junction for Highland Lakes Rd. Continue south through Golden Valley, up past Quamby Bluff and Projection Bluff to Pine Lake, approximately 25km from the junction. A car park and boardwalk on the west side of the road mark the starting point for the walk.
Warnings:
E...Exposed alpine conditions – can be dangerous in poor weather if not fully equipped.
B... Boulder field – walkers need to be able to confidently step from rock to rock.
Gaiters recommended due to off-track walking. You should always carry wet weather gear as well as warm clothing including gloves and beanies in case of sudden weather changes, which can be expected even when the weather is fine elsewhere in the state.
