Mt. Maurice Sat. 1st December 2018
Celebrate the coming of summer with our annual walk to Mt. Maurice on Sat. 1st December. This open-topped mountain is north-east of Mt. Barrow and offers views of the north east forests and out to the coast. Waratah and wild flowers are usually in season!Walk route:
Since the last Boots N' All walk to Mt. Maurice in 2016, the road to the western approach has closed due to a fallen bridge, so your leader will again use the south- eastern Mt. Maurice track. The approach from Diddleum Rd via Russells Rd and Maurice Rd is only partly accessible to cars and SUVs, and it will be necessary to use a 4WD vehicle to shuttle walkers for the final 3-4 km to the start of the walking track.
After a short, steep section at the start of the track, the walk is relatively level for the next kilometre, then rises steadily over another km before a fairly steep rise of a further 100 metres altitude over 500 metres to reach the summit plateau. Total walk distance is about 4 km each way, with altitude gain of just over 200 metres. Fallen trees may form obstacles on the track. The walk is rated easy-medium, and is suitable for less experienced walkers and energetic children.

If you are interested in going on this walk, please phone Andrew Madden on 6399 3315 to book in. Please let Andrew know if you are bringing a vehicle. If you have a higher clearance 4WD - Land Cruiser, Prado, Patrol, Pajero, Challenger etc, you will be able to assist with the shuttle.
The departure time is 8:30 am from the car park behind the Commonwealth Bank at Newstead - access off David St. approx. 50 metres from the Elphin Rd. traffic lights. The alternative meeting place is at the entrance to Myrtle Park at 9 am. However, you still need to contact the walk leader per details above if intending to walk. The leader should be notified of any other people you intend to bring along. Please be at any meeting place 5 minutes ahead of departure time.
To access this area from northern Tasmania: From Launceston, proceed along the Tasman Hwy through Waverley and continue 33 km to reach the Myrtle Park picnic ground gate. After joining with any vehicles meeting us there, continue a further 500 metres and turn right into Camden Hill Rd. After approx. 6.5 km, turn left into Diddleum Rd, and after a further 2.5 km, take the right turn at the junction of East Diddleum Rd. A further 7.5 km along Diddleum Rd will bring you to the junction of Russells Rd (about 1/2 km past Knights Rd). It is recommended that you meet the leader at this junction. To get to the track start, follow Russells Rd for 2.9 km, and turn left into Maurice Rd. The track begins about 5.5 km further along Maurice Rd, on the left. A reminder that Maurice Rd has deep washouts that will prevent access by low clearance 2WD vehicles and SUVs.

S... Steep incline for at least part of the way
Make sure you have a good supply of drinking water.
Some sections of the track will be uneven and rocky. Walkers are advised to wear strong shoes or boots.
You should always carry wet weather gear.
