Breona Tier - Sat. 11th January 2020

Here's your chance to be part of the first Boots N' All bushwalk for 2020! We hope you have had a good look at the new 2020 walks calendar, perhaps printed one or two, emailed the link to friends and started to plan which ones appeal to you! You could even set a late new year's resolution to participate in at least 5 or 6 of the walks during the year!
We did list Breona Tier last year, but the walk didn't go ahead. Located west of the northern end of Great Lake, it offers expansive views across Great Lake and further afield, and alpine meadows. Hopefully, the scoparia will still be in flower! The walk is relatively flat, with less than 100 metres altitude gain, but it is not tracked. The the open alpine meadows make fairly easy walking after the first km or so from the road (which can be uncomfortably uneven and spongy), and bands of scrub are easily avoided. We will need to scramble up and down short distances of boulders to ascend to and descend from the high points. The length of the walk will depend on the conditions encountered on the day, and the energy levels of the party.

Walk route:
From roadside at Mickeys Creek 4 km south of the car park at Pine Lake, we head west and then north-west during the first 2 km, gradually gaining altitude, then west for a further 2 km and another 1 km SW to reach the western end of Wares Marshes. Heading a few hundred metres south, we reach the eastern end of Wild Dog Tier, although the summit (and peakbagger point) is a further 6.5 km west. Heading SE, we cross Pine Tree Rivulet (a rainfall station is somewhere in the area) to reach the southern prominence of Breona Tier before heading NW to the northern prominence. From there, we will either  follow the curve of the tier around to its eastern prominence, or move closer to our earlier outward route to avoid a steeper and rougher descent to the road. The walk is rated medium, but apart from the distance, is relatively easy and would be suitable for energetic and resilient older children. Total return walk distance is approximately 14 km if we go as far as Wares Marshes.

Meeting Times and Places:
If you are interested in going on this walk, please phone Basil Tkaczuk on 6331 1155 or reply to this emailto book in. The departure time is 8:00am from Door of Hope carpark in South Launceston. The alternative meeting place/time is at the "train park" in Deloraine at 8:30 am. (If coming from east, cross the bridge and turn right at the roundabout). If you would like to arrange to meet the group at these places or elsewhere, please arrange with the leader, and please be at any meeting place 5 minutes ahead of the listed time. The leader must be notified of any other people you intend to bring along.
To access this area from northern Tasmania:
To access the walk from Launceston, head towards Deloraine on the Bass Highway (50 km) and take the first (eastern) turn from the highway into Deloraine. Continue into the town and turn left immediately before the bridge (unless heading for the meeting place - see above). From Deloraine, head south along the "Lake Highway" - now Highland Lakes Rd. (but the first bit may be called Meander Rd!). Make sure to turn left after 7 km at signposted junction for Highland Lakes Rd.  Continue south through Golden Valley, up past Quamby Bluff and Projection Bluff to Pine Lake, approximately 25km from the junction. Continue a further 4 km south along the Highland Lakes Road. The walk begins at Mickeys Creek, just short of the car park and lookout at the top of the "haulage" descent to Great Lake.
