MT. NELSON TRACK – SAT. 13TH DECEMBER

Mt. Nelson has been a favoured place to look out over Hobart and the Derwent estuary from the earliest days of European settlement, and probably earlier. There are several descriptions of the walk on the internet, although some include continuations to other tracks such as the Truganini Track, which comes up more steeply from Taroona.
Walk Route:
The Mt Nelson Track starts at Queenborough Memorial Reserve in Sandy Bay, not much above sea level (alt. 40 m), although we will be starting slightly higher at Churchill Avenue, and rises steadily and steeply over 2.5 km to reach 350 m, so expect a good work-out for those calf muscles! The track is well-formed, and the outing is suitable for reasonably fit and energetic adults and children, so it is rated family-friendly, but not suited for strollers or wheelchairs.

Meeting Times and Places:
We will meet at 2 pm at the south end of Lambert Park on Churchill Avenue. Allow about 2 hours for the return trip and rest at the top. Bring a snack and a drink to have at the lookout.
If you are interested in going on this walk, please phone Dan Hutchison on 0457 765 907 to book in.
See road details below. As this is an easier local walk, you could certainly just turn up on the day, but Dan would like you to make yourself known and needs to record you on the registration sheet for insurance purposes. And of course, he would like to introduce you to the other walkers!
If you negotiate any travel arrangements with the leader or one of the other walkers, please be at any meeting place 5 minutes ahead of departure time.
To access this area from Hobart: From Hobart city, follow up Davey St. to Regent St, turn left and continue past university and Nelson Rd. to reach Lambert Park. Meet Dan at the south end of the park. There are, of course, alternate routes to the location if coming from the south or from Sandy Bay.

Equipment and Warnings:
Bring sturdy shoes, suitable clothing in case of change of weather, plenty of water, a drink and snacks.
Optional: trekking poles, camera
