Mt Maurice - Sat. 6th December 2014

You are invited to attend the Boots N' All walk to Mt. Maurice this coming weekend, Sat. 6th December. This open-topped mountain is north-east of Mt. Barrow and offers views of the north east forests and out to the coast. Waratah and wild flowers are usually in season!
Walk route:
The Mt. Maurice track is approx. 3.5 km each way, rising about 250 metres through forest and alpine vegetation to an open, relatively flat summit plateau.

Meeting Times and Places:
If you are interested in going on this walk, please phone Andrew Madden on 6399 3315 to book in. Because of the 4WD access to this walk, all intending walkers MUST contact Andrew by Friday night to make sure everyone has a seat in a suitable vehicle. The last few km of road includes some badly eroded sections which last December proved challenging for "soft-roaders" such as Subaru Forester, but higher clearance 4WD vehicles had no difficulty.
The departure time is 8:30am from the car park behind the Commonwealth Bank at Newstead - access off David St. approx. 50 metres from the Elphin Rd. traffic lights. The alternative meeting place is at the entrance to Myrtle Park at 8:30 am. However, you still need to contact the walk leader, Andrew Madden, per details above if intending to walk, because of the difficult road access.
You should always contact the walk leader if intending to participate in a particular Boots N' All walk
. The leader should also be notified of any other people you intend to bring along.
To access this area from northern Tasmania:  From Launceston, proceed along the Tasman Hwy through Waverley and continue 33 km to reach the Myrtle Park picnic ground gate. After joining with any vehicles meeting us there, continue a further 500 metres and turn right into Camden Hill Rd. After approx. 6.5 km, turn left into Diddleum Rd, and after a further 2.5 km, take the right turn at the junction of East Diddleum Rd. A further 7.5 km along Diddleum Rd will bring you to the junction of Russell's Rd. Turn left, and after 3 km, turn left again into Maurice Rd. A further 5.5 km should bring you to the start of the Mt. Maurice track.

Warnings:
S    Steep incline for at least part of the way
Make sure you have a good supply of drinking water.
There may be fallen trees to clamber over, and walkers are advised to wear strong shoes or boots. You should always carry wet weather gear.

If you are unsure of equipment requirements, Visit the Boots N' All section of the sutas.org.au website per link below and read "Clothing suggestions for exposed conditions"

Mt. Maurice will earn you 1 point on the Hobart Walking Club Peakbagger's Guide (2000 revision) which can be found and downloaded (as an Excel spreadsheet) from
http://tastracks.webs.com/peakbaggers.htm  The same web page contains several other listings of Tasmanian peaks.

GPX and Google Earth versions of the track are attached, although there is some "wandering" in the location of the falls. Double-clicking on the Google Earth (kml) track should open Google Earth and zoom in to the location if you have Google Earth installed on your computer. The .gpx version of the track should import into mapping software or devices that support gpx tracks and waypoints.

(Google Map View:  Google Earth .kml files in the past could be overlaid on Google Map provided the .kml file was on a website - not just on your local computer.  There is now a new version of Google Map, and I haven't yet figured out how to load kml files into it. If you know how to do this, please let me know.  Watch this space!)

GPS Discussions See http://bootsnall.sutas.org.au/GPS_discussions.htm for discussion about the respective merits of hand-held GPS devices and smartphones with GPS built in, as well as information about how to use a Garmin Etrex10 GPS.
File Repository  Boots N' All now has its own file repository on the sutas website. See http://bootsnall.sutas.org.au  At the moment, this is only a file repository, and not a proper website, but any of the .gpx and .kml files from recent walks can be downloaded from there. These can be found in folders called GPXfiles and GoogleEarth. Eventually, more tracks will be uploaded there, and hopefully some more detailed walks descriptions for possible future walks.
