Projection Bluff -Tues. 27th December 2022 A relaxing walk on the northern escarpment of Tasmania’s spectacular central plateau is a great way to walk off that Christmas cheer! If we do the complete walk, it would be about 6-8 km, depending on the route taken, and most of it is across the relatively flat alpine heights. From the road bend at the upper reaches of the Liffey River, west across a Hydro water harvesting canal and some scattered hut ruins, eventually reaching the western edge of the prominence, and then north towards the summit – only a few metres higher than the prevailing flatness of the plateau. The western edges of Projection Bluff offer spectacular views of Huntsman Lake and across the upper Meander Valley towards the high places of Bastion Bluff, Mother Cummings and Ironstone, and the eastern side offers broad perspectives across the upper Liffey Valley, and Liffey Bluff opposite. Quamby Bluff dominates the skyline to the north, but there are expansive views of the north of the state. How much of this full route we cover will depend on the weather and how the group is faring on the day. This walk is rated “medium” due to off-track walking across uneven ground, but is suited to moderately fit walkers. Energetic and resilient children should be fine! Meeting Times and Places: If you are interested in going on this walk, please phone Phil Andrew, ph. 0408 014 757 to book in. The departure time is 8:30 am from Door of Hope carpark in South Launceston. Depending on people needing to meet the group, the alternative meeting place/time is at the “train park” in Deloraine at 9 am. (If coming into Deloraine from east, cross the bridge and turn right at the roundabout). However, you still need to contact the walk leader per details above if intending to walk. The leader should be notified of any other people you intend to bring along. Please be at any meeting place 5 minutes ahead of departure time. Scoparia in full bloom at Projection Bluff – December 2016 To access this area from northern Tasmania: To access the walk from Launceston, head towards Deloraine on the Bass Highway (50 km) and take the first (eastern) turn from the highway into Deloraine. Continue into the town and turn left immediately before the bridge (unless heading for the meeting place – see above). From Deloraine, head south along the “Lake Highway” – now Highland Lakes Rd. (but the first bit may be called Meander Rd!). Make sure to turn left after 7 km at signposted junction for Highland Lakes Rd. Continue south through Golden Valley, up past Quamby Bluff to the marked car park on eastern side of road, and start of the track for Projection Bluff a little further on, opposite side of road, approximately 22 km from the junction. Warnings: Make sure you have a good supply of drinking water – suggest 1 litre per person. There may be drinkable water on the way, but less likely on the higher ground. Walkers are advised to wear strong shoes or boots to protect against ankle injury. You should always carry wet weather gear as well as warm clothing in case of sudden weather changes. As this is a summer walk, please take precautions against sun exposure – a broad rimmed hat and sunscreen are advised.
