Trevallyn Dam is within the Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area on the South Esk River, just a short drive outside Launceston and is a great spot for our next family-friendly walk. The bush trail we will be taking will follow along the South Esk River and will give us some enjoyable views along the way.
Walking Route:
We will start at the Trevallyn Dam carpark at 2 pm taking in the views and information around the dam. We will then head south-east to the beginning of the trail to Hoo Hoo Hut. The trail is about 1.8 km and expected to take 30 mins. The track does ascend and descend in places but we are mostly following the contours around the valley so no large climbs (less than 40 metres climb). At Hoo Hoo Hut there is a lookout that looks back along the valleyWe'll also take the short 200 metre side trip to check out Deadman’s Hollow lookout. We will then retrace our steps back along the route taken to return to the Trevallyn Dam carpark by 4 pm.

Unlike the regular Boots N’ All walks which often visit more challenging wilderness areas, there is no particular need to register in advance for these Sunday afternoon Family Fun Walks. Your walk leader would nevertheless appreciate if you could let him know you are coming, so that the walk doesn’t set off without you.
To access this area from northern Tasmania:
From the city centre of Launceston, head west along Paterson St, continuing on Bridge Rd, across Kings Bridge and up Trevallyn Rd. Continue on Gorge Rd, through the roundabout at the Trevallyn shops, and turn right at the next roundabout to head up Bald Hill Rd. Turn left into Veulalee Avenue, and left into Reatta Rd. Continue along Reatta Rd. past the last houses, past the Paringa Archery Centre, past the junction on right which leads to Trevallyn Lake, past another junction 150m further junction on (Duck Reach Road) and follow the main road a little over 1 km further to reach the carpark at Trevallyn Dam. Those familiar with Launceston will no doubt be aware of other ways to get there.
Other Information:
These Sunday afternoon walks do not require the level of preparation and equipment needed for wilderness walks. Dress comfortably and sensibly, and remember that even over a 2 hour period, weather can be changeable in northern Tasmania, so it’s always a great idea to have a warm top and a raincoat in your backpack, along with a drink and perhaps a snack.
Yes, we know… Parents of very young children often have to carry a lot more, including children in backpacks! Hopefully your fellow walkers will offer to share the burden!
The track is narrow and although the grass and shrubs have been cleared in sections some remains. It is recommended to wear trousers or gaiters to avoid getting cuts or grass seeds in your shoes.
