20240602 West Tamar Circuit

West Tamar Circuit
Sunday afternoon
2nd June 2024

Tailrace Park is a popular place for families to enjoy the playground, BBQ facilities and access to the river via the Tailrace. There is also the West Tamar Circuit walking trail which runs all the way back to King’s Bridge.  Part of the circuit is currently closed, but we will enjoy the other sections of this trail.  The Tailrace Park is about a 5-minute drive from central Launceston.

Walking Route:
We will meet at the Visitor Information Sign at Tailrace Park car park at 2 pm. Heading past the playground, we will follow the track closest to the river back towards Launceston.  We will stop at the Tamar River Viewing Platform and then depending on time, continue on, possibly as far as the bridge before we re-trace our steps. There will be plenty of time for kids to enjoy the playground and adults to take more time to catch up once we return to Tailrace Park.

Meeting Times and Places:
If you are interested in going on this walk, please phone Jonathan Burgess on 0455 463 809 to book in. We will be meeting at the Tailrace Park car park at 2pm.
Unlike the regular Boots N’ All walks which often visit more challenging wilderness areas, there is no particular need to register in advance for these Sunday afternoon Family Fun Walks. Your walk leaders would nevertheless appreciate if you could let them know you are coming, so that the walk doesn’t set off without you.

To access this area from northern Tasmania:
From the city centre of Launceston, head south-west along York Street, following the curve to the right after the last set of traffic lights as it changes into West Tamar Road.  Follow West Tamar Road across the bridge and past the suburb of Trevallyn.  Once you pass the power station on your right-hand side, turn right at the next opportunity on your right (Riverview Road, but signage says Elouera St) and turn right again into the southbound lanes of West Tamar Road heading back to Launceston, but move across to the left lane.  Take the second left (the one after Waterfront Drive and just after the tailrace outlet) and follow this road down to the car park.

Other Information:
These Sunday afternoon walks do not require the level of preparation and equipment needed for wilderness walks. Dress comfortably and sensibly, and remember that even over the timeframe of the walk, weather can be changeable in northern Tasmania, so it’s always a great idea to have a warm top and a raincoat in your backpack, along with a drink and perhaps a snack.
Yes, we know… Parents of very young children often have to carry a lot more, including children in backpacks! Hopefully your fellow walkers will offer to share the burden!

The track is initially concrete but then transitions to gravel and dirt for most of its length.  It is a very flat track so should be suitable for all walking levels as well as prams.  This track is commonly used by runners and cyclists in both directions.  We will need to be vigilant in watching any children and ensuring we leave enough room for others to safely pass.  Dogs are also welcome but would need to be kept on a lead.
